ACT Approaches Juniors

by Mila Murray

ACT. Just the word creates all sorts of emotions in students. Juniors will be undergoing the Michigan Merit Examination (MME), taking the ACT on March 4 from 7:35 a.m. to 12:00 a.m. at school.

The MME doesn’t just include the ACT. March 5 and 6 may be late start days for freshman, sophomores, and seniors but for the juniors, qualification for a National Career Readiness Certificate through a three part assessment called Work Keys will take place on March 5 and an assessment on Michigan Mathematics, Science, and Social Studies on March 6, from 7:35 a.m. to 10:45 a.m. on both days.

But the ACT is the only test that will be providing students with that score they’ve been practicing for all this time.

“I have done no extra [ACT] practice except for one online worksheet,” junior Audrey Bury said. “I feel like I’m not going to have enough time and will leave a lot of answers blank.”

Once junior year hits students are offered with various ACT prep summer courses and in class practices for the standardized test.

“Some practice is always good,” Bury said. “But I wouldn’t go out and spend a $1,000 on four classes. Too much is too much.”

Practice or no practice, it is more important to make sure you are both mentally and physically ready for the test. Don’t study the night before. Get enough rest.

“Studies show studying the night before the ACT may jumble information in your mind,” Bury said. “Instead, just watch a movie or relax.”
