The Source staff had a great opportunity on Feb. 20, when Dave Birkett, the Lions football beat writer for the Detroit Free Press came in to speak to the class.

Birkett talked about what he does to write stories on the Lions daily, how he got into the journalism profession, and some of his most exciting stories he reported and written.

Staff writer Kevin Shin thought it was great to hear a working journalist give his perspective about his job.

“He’s dedicated to his line of work and is really passionate about what he does,” Shin said. “He shared his personal experience about some stories he’s written and that was cool to hear.”

The opportunity was set up by Brian Schmucker, a student’s dad, through a charity auction where he saw the chance to meet Birkett and a chance for something else as well.

“Birkett had just won sportswriter of the year and then I saw the auction go up and I thought it’d be a great opportunity for [the class],” Schmucker said.

Gayle Martin, Source advisor, loved having an award-winning professional come into the class.

“I haven’t ever been a working journalist,” Martin said. “So he was able to share some things like hours and real-world application.”
